Job summary

BOXABL is seeking an experienced R&D Engineer to lead exploration from concept through prototyping and transfer to production. You will tackle open-ended technical problems, translate findings into practical, manufacturable designs, and work across design and manufacturing teams to drive new technologies to market.

The role requires hands-on prototyping, strong experimental design skills, and ability to work in ambiguity while delivering impactful results for the company’s housing innovation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in R&D testing or product development engineering.
  • Strong hands-on prototyping skills across multiple fabrication methods.
  • Experience with CAD tools (SolidWorks or equivalent).
  • Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals and domain knowledge.
  • Experience designing experiments, including test planning, data collection, and analysis.
  • Ability to work with ambiguous problems and structure an approach.
  • Excellent technical documentation and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and code compliance processes (UL/CSA/IEC/ETL).
  • Experience working with test labs, certification bodies, or notified bodies.

Responsibilities

  • Research, design, and prototype new concepts, materials, and technologies to solve open-ended technical problems.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and proof-of-concept builds to validate ideas before full development.
  • Design and run experiments, tests, and simulations to characterize performance and design limits.
  • Build and iterate on prototypes rapidly using 3D printing, machining, and benchtop fixtures.
  • Analyze test data and translate findings into actionable design recommendations.
  • Collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to transition projects into producible designs.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to product roadmap.
  • Document research methodology, findings, and IP-relevant work.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risk early in development cycle.
  • Present findings to engineering leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.

The ideal candidate is comfortable operating in ambiguity, enjoys hands-on experimentation, and can translate research findings into practical, manufacturable outcomes.### **Job Duties and Responsibilities*** Research, design, and prototype new concepts, materials, and technologies to solve open-ended technical problems* Conduct feasibility studies and proof-of-concept builds to validate new ideas before committing to full product development* Design and run experiments, tests, and simulations to characterize performance, failure modes, and design limits* Build and iterate on prototypes rapidly, using both traditional and rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, machining, benchtop fixtures, etc.)* Analyze test data and translate findings into actionable design recommendations* Collaborate with design engineering and production/manufacturing engineering teams to transition successful R&D projects into producible designs* Stay current with emerging technologies, materials, and industry trends relevant to the company's product roadmap* Document research methodology, findings, and IP-relevant work (lab notebooks, technical reports, invention disclosures)* Identify and mitigate technical risk early in the development cycle* Present research findings and recommendations to engineering leadership and cross-functional stakeholders## Qualifications### **Experience and Education*** Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field (or equivalent practical experience)* Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in R&D Testing, or product development engineering* Strong hands-on prototyping skills and comfort working across multiple fabrication methods* Experience with CAD tools (SolidWorks or equivalent) for concept modeling and prototype design* Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals — mechanics, materials, thermal, or relevant domain knowledge* Experience designing and executing experiments, including test planning, data collection, and statistical analysis* Ability to work with ambiguous, loosely defined problems and independently structure an approach* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; comfortable with iterative, hypothesis-driven work* Excellent technical documentation and communication skills, including presenting findings to non-technical stakeholders* Familiarity with regulatory and code compliance processes — building codes, product listing requirements (UL/CSA/IEC/ETL), and safety/performance standards relevant to the product category* Experience working with test labs, certification bodies, or notified bodies to achieve product listings or approvals### **Preferred Qualifications*** Comfortable owning multiple concurrent projects and driving them to completion under tight deadlines* Familiarity with rapid prototyping technologies (additive manufacturing, CNC, laser cutting)* Solidworks Certification (CSWA or higher) a plus* Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management software* Exposure to Lean Manufacturing, or continuous improvement principles* Prior experience in automotive product design/testing### **Work Environment/Physical Demands**The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
