Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Research Technologist 2 to provide technical support in design, fabrication, and assembly of components for research and development experiments in the Q-5 group. The role involves working with scientists, engineers, and technicians, with on-the-job training in machining and access to a satellite machine shop.

You will collaborate on prototype designs, develop procedures, and recommend solutions to ensure project requirements are met, while

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and 5 years related experience or equivalent education/experience.
• Experience designing and manufacturing parts, fixturing, and complex assemblies.
• Experience operating manual and CNC machining equipment; tolerances and precision measurements.
• Ability to read engineering drawings.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Problem-solving skills in R&D from design to fabrication.
• Prototype machining operations knowledge including CNC and manual tools.
• Experience testing, maintaining, and troubleshooting mechanical systems and tooling.
• CAD/CAM knowledge
• High explosives handler qualification (desired)

Responsibilities

• Collaborating with project teams to plan and refine prototype designs, contributing your technical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
• Fabricate and assemble complex components from a variety of materials, working from drawings and instructions to meet specifications.
• Develop new procedures and protocols to support evolving project needs.
• Recommend solutions to issues that may affect project requirements or timelines.
• Communicate effectively with researchers and staff across backgrounds to support design goals.
