Job summary

Magna Cosma in Birmingham, Alabama seeks a Casting Quality Technician to audit and document K3 Casting parts and processes, ensuring they meet customer expectations and approvals for production. The role supports plant safety, quality leadership, and continuous improvement on the shop floor.

The technician will perform metal chemistry and density testing, X-ray and blister tests, and prepare samples for mechanical property analysis, while adhering to 5S and quality standards across shifts.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 6 months to 1 year related experience.
  • Proficient in precision measurement tools.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications.
  • Knowledge of PDCA/8D/5 Why is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Follow and enforce all plant safety rules.
  • Perform Incoming Inspection Testing and report results.
  • Conduct Metal Chemistry and Density testing.
  • Perform X-Ray and Blister testing.
  • Prepare mechanical property samples for testing.
  • Perform all mechanical property tests daily.
  • Escalate non-conforming conditions and issue Quality Alerts.
  • Coordinate with engineering and quality leadership to resolve issues.
  • Travel as needed for rework/sort.
  • Maintain quality alert folders and 5S housekeeping.

Job Responsibilities:

PURPOSE OF POSITION The function of the Casting Quality Technician is to ensure K3 Casting parts and processes are audited and documented for Customer and Kamtek Casting. Make sure they meet all documented customer expectations. The Quality Technician will give K3 Casting team/lines approval or
not to proceed with production, support plant needs as necessary. The Quality Technician is responsible for their safety and well-being as well as quality, part audits, system audits, customer cost, productivity. Techs are to report findings and actions taken in reference to any concerns previous or current to the
Production Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITIONS:

  • Follow and enforce all plant safety rules and policies.
  • Understand and promote Magna’s philosophies and Employee’s Charter
  • Responsible for making decisions on findings to determine if acceptable to Customer or not, support Customer Specific Standards
  • Perform Incoming Inspection Testing on Ingot Shipments (Chemistry Spectrograph) and report
    results to Quality Leadership
  • Perform Metal Chemistry and Density Testing and material pulls (Spectrograph and Density
    Scale)
  • Perform X-Ray Testing (Radiograph)
  • Perform Blister Test (X-Ray, Blister Oven, Heat Treat part review)
  • Perform Sample Prep for Mechanical Properties (Prepare parts for Heat Treat, Collect Parts from
    Heat treat trees, Mark up, Cut, CNC Mill, Identify test pieces for Testing)
  • Perform all Mechanical Property tests as follows:
    o Tensile Test daily each shift
    o Bend Test and Punch Rivet daily each shift (Ductile Test)
    o Microscopic review of MP Failures for Assignable Causes
    o Thread Test Weekly on shift rotation 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (Review Schedule)
    o Brinell Hardness upon request
    o Optical Profilometer Weekly on shift rotation 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (Review Schedule)
  • Report out and Escalate any Non-Conforming condition found during testing
  • Perform required re-testing identified and issue Quality Alert when necessary
  • Pass down to communicate shift concerns.
  • Interface with engineering and quality leadership to resolve quality concerns.
  • Customer/Vendor travel for rework/sort etc…, or otherwise directed by leadership.
  • Maintain Quality alert folders and concern matrix using Kamtek Manufacturing System
  • Promote good housekeeping daily (5S).
  • Perform other duties as required (Assist auditors).

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED);
  • Six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of precision measuring tools including tape measures, scales, vernier calipers, etc.
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook Express.
  • PDCA/8D/5 why knowledge a plus.
