Job summary

Cleveland-Cliffs in East Chicago offers a best-in-class internship program in the steel industry, partnering with universities for co-ops. As a Quality Engineering Intern, you will support the Metallurgical Department through lab work, data analysis, and safety inspections.

Interns work with engineers on real projects, gain hands-on experience, and may be considered for full-time opportunities. Enrollment in a relevant BS program is required and US work authorization is needed.

Qualifications

• Enrollment in a Bachelor of Science program in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or other related technical degree.
• Completion of at least sophomore year by summer 2027.
• Applicants must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Responsibilities

• Complete monthly safety inspections and safety observations for the Metallurgical Department.
• Work safely and assure plant safety policies are followed.
• Manage workflow in the mechanical and chemical test lab.
• Manage test equipment calibrations.
• Create new operating efficiencies to maintain production, testing, and shipping of steel with a leaner workforce.
• Maintain Steelmaking spectrometer lab, calibration, and on-call support.
• Responsible for data-mining investigations with metallurgical grade performance, chemistry, scrap charges, etc.
• Responsible for Metallurgical grade maintenance and development.
• Manage 3rd party testing inspection.
• Maintain tracking of Steelmaking scrap, referral, and diversions.
• Responsible for Metallurgical investigations.
