- Quality Control Technician (Welding Focus)
- QC Welding Inspector
- QA/QC Inspector
Job Summary
The Quality Control Technician inspects welded structures, piping, or pressure components across the production lifecycle (before, during, and after welding). This role verifies material traceability, checks welding procedure compliance, documents inspection findings, and collaborates with production teams to prevent defects and costly rework.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Welding Stage
- Verify Materials: Check base metals, filler metals, and welding consumables against Material Test Reports (MTRs) and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Check Fit-Up & Alignment: Inspect root gaps, bevel angles, joint preparation, alignment, and tack welds prior to actual welding.
- Validate Qualifications: Confirm that welders and welding operators hold active, valid qualifications for the specific processes used (e.g., SMAW, GTAW, GMAW).
During Welding Stage
- Monitor Parameters: Check preheat temperatures, interpass temperatures, and travel/heat input compliance against the WPS.
- In-Process Inspections: Observe ongoing welding activities to ensure proper technique, interpass cleaning, and spatter/arc-strike prevention.
Post-Welding & Final Inspection
- Visual & Dimensional Checks: Perform visual inspections for cracks, porosity, undercut, and incomplete fusion, and measure throat/leg sizes using gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
- Coordinate NDE/NDT: Arrange and review Non-Destructive Examination (such as UT, MPI, LPT, or RT).
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain weld maps, inspection logs, nonconformance reports (NCRs), and data packages.
- Audit Support: Work alongside third-party inspectors, customer representatives, and Authorized Inspectors (AIs).
Required Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED; associate degree or technical certification in welding technology or a related field is preferred.
- Experience: 2 to 5+ years of hands-on quality control or inspection experience in a heavy steel fabrication, piping, or welding shop.
- Certifications (Highly Preferred): AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or ASNT Level II NDE certifications.
- Technical Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols.
- Familiarity with industry codes and standards (e.g., AWS D1.1 for structural steel or ASME Section VIII/IX for pressure vessels).
- Proficiency with precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, gauge rulers).
- Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, clear communication skills, and the ability to address quality issues constructively with shop floor welders.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Shop floor or field fabrication site with exposure to bright lights, noise, heavy machinery, and metalworking tools.
- Physical Demands: Standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting up to 40-50 lbs.
