Job description

Remitian is looking for a high-agency QA Engineer to help us build quality into the software that moves money and tax data for our customers. We process payments to tax authorities on a daily schedule, which means a defect that reaches production is not an inconvenience, it is a missed payment, a compliance exposure, and a loss of customer trust.

This is a Quality Engineering role, not a manual testing seat. Automation is our default: you will write and own Playwright test suites, build API automation, and treat every escaped defect as a signal to improve the process rather than just a bug to reproduce. Manual and exploratory testing still matter, and you will do both, but the goal is always to encode what you learn into something repeatable.

You will embed with product engineering squads as their quality partner, joining refinement and sprint planning so that testability and risk are discussed before code is written rather than after. You will also own release verification for the work you cover, which means your sign-off is a real gate.

This role is based in either our Ottawa, Ontario office or in Florida, with Miami preferred, on a hybrid schedule of 3 to 4 days per week in office.

Key Responsibilities
Product Quality Partnership
  • Review stories and acceptance criteria before development begins, raising testability gaps, risks, and automation opportunities
  • Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, and retrospectives
  • Validate features against acceptance criteria and run risk-based exploratory testing to find what the criteria missed
  • Reproduce, verify, and close the loop on bugs, including validating fixes and checking for regressions
Test Automation
  • Write and maintain UI automation in Playwright, expanding both the sanity and regression suites
  • Build and maintain API automation covering internal and public endpoints, including functional tests, contract validation, authentication, and error handling
  • Follow and improve framework patterns such as page object models and shared utilities, keeping tests readable and maintainable
  • Automate new functionality within the same development cycle wherever practical
  • Hunt down flaky tests and fix the root cause rather than retrying around it
  • Participate in automation code reviews and help raise the standard of the suite over time
Release and Production Quality
  • Execute sanity and regression cycles for releases, and give a clear, evidence-based quality assessment
  • Verify releases after deployment, confirming that critical workflows behave correctly in production
  • Help define and enforce the quality gates a release has to clear before it ships
  • Escalate risk clearly and early when a release is not ready, with the evidence to back it up
Test Infrastructure and Data
  • Maintain test environments, test accounts, and the test data that automation depends on
  • Keep automation running reliably in CI and keep results easy for engineers to read and act on
  • Improve reporting so that a failing suite tells the team what broke and where, not just that something broke
  • Track and act on quality signals such as automation coverage, pass rates, defect escape rate, and test stability
  • Turn every production defect into a concrete improvement: new automation, better monitoring, clearer requirements, or a process change
  • Contribute to quality standards, testing documentation, and onboarding material
  • Push back, raise concerns, and surface ideas that improve quality or how the team works
Who You Are
  • Two to five years of experience in QA, quality engineering, test automation, or a similar role
  • Hands-on experience writing automated tests, ideally with deally using Playwright with Typescript
  • Practical experience testing REST APIs, including authentication flows, request and response validation, and error cases
  • Solid grasp of testing fundamentals: risk-based prioritisation, boundary and negative cases, and knowing when automation is the wrong answer
  • Comfortable reading application logs and querying data to investigate an issue rather than stopping at the symptom
  • High agency, meaning you find work that needs doing, take ownership, and move things forward without being told
  • Strong written and verbal communicator, able to write a defect report an engineer can act on immediately and explain risk clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • Detail-oriented and sceptical in the productive sense: you ask what happens when this fails
  • Excited to work in a fast-paced startup environment where priorities shift and ambiguity is part of the job
  • Based in or willing to relocate to either the Ottawa, Ontario area or Florida, with Miami preferred, and excited to be in the office 3 to 4 days per week
Nice to Haves
  • Experience in fintech, payments, banking, accounting, or another regulated industry
  • Exposure to payment flows, financial reconciliation, or tax and compliance workflows
  • Experience testing public-facing APIs consumed by external partners, including versioning and contract compatibility
  • Experience integrating automated suites into CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with performance, load, or security testing
  • Familiarity with .NET applications, or with cloud services such as AWS or Azure
  • Experience using LLMs and AI tooling to generate, maintain, or triage tests
  • Experience being the first or one of the first quality hires on a team, and building process from scratch
Why Join Us
  • Join a quality function that is being built as a real engineering discipline, with automation, release governance, and metrics at its centre rather than manual test scripts
  • Your sign-off actually gates releases, and your judgment on risk carries weight
  • Own meaningful automation from day one and see your coverage compound across every release
  • Work on mission-critical fintech systems where correctness genuinely matters, including validation that reaches all the way through to government payment portals
  • Broad scope across product testing, UI automation, API automation, release quality, and production verification, with no permanent siloing into one specialty
  • Use modern tools, including AI and LLM tooling, to move quickly and build with leverage
  • Hybrid work from either our Ottawa or Florida location, where the team comes together 3 to 4 days per week to build, ship, and learn alongside one another
