Job summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution seeks a QMED Oiler for an on-board assignment aboard a vessel operating from Norfolk, VA to Golfito, Costa Rica. You will support engineers in operation, maintenance, and repair of engine room equipment, perform lubrication, bilge pumping, and routine cleanliness duties, and log all watch data.

The position requires a USCG QMED Oiler credential, relevant sea duty, and adherence to safety procedures.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent education and one year sea duty as an Oiler.
• U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Credential endorsed as a QMED Oiler.
• Familiar with engine room equipment and tools; able to diagnose malfunctions and perform basic calculations.
• Unlicensed personnel must have required training, TWIC, passport; pass a DOT drug screen; hold USCG medical certificate.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers with operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment and spaces.
• Lubricate propulsion engines and auxiliary equipment; pump bilges and clean strainers and filters.
• Maintain logs of watch operations and conditions; record anomalies and emergency signals.
• Stand engine room watch or generator watch in port; assist in port maintenance and repairs.
• Perform general duties: cleaning, painting, loading supplies, and shore power connections.
