QA/QC TECHNICAL REVIEWER - STRUCTURAL

Requirement: Must live in or relocate to the Los Angeles, CA area.

Help Set the Structural Standard for the Second-Largest School District in the Nation

LAUSD builds, modernizes, and maintains facilities for hundreds of thousands of students across Los Angeles. As the QA/QC Technical Reviewer - Structural, you will be the District's structural expert in its Asset Management/Standards group. You will review designs from commissioned architects and engineers, guide project teams on technical questions, and shape the design standards used on every future school project.

This role suits a seasoned California structural engineer who knows DSA school work well. It trades production deadlines for a senior advisory position with lasting impact.

What You'll Do

• Perform technical reviews of structural plans and specifications submitted by District staff, consultants, and commissioned architects and engineers.
• Provide review comments on compliance with District standards, quality of structural design and documentation, and coordination with other disciplines.
• Perform QA/QC, constructability, and peer reviews of District projects during design and construction.
• Advise Owner Authorized Representatives (OARs), Inspectors, Design Managers, and A/E teams on product substitutions, deviations from District standards, and technical questions.
• Contribute research and lessons learned to the District's Design Guidelines, including the School Design Guide, Educational Specifications, Guide Technical Specifications, and Standard Technical Drawings.
• Help update District design policies and structural specifications so they meet code and safety requirements and improve the quality and economy of construction, maintenance, and operation.
• Coordinate with Design and A/E Technical Support units and other District organizations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements (All Required)

• License: A valid California Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
• Experience: Ten (10) years of full-time, paid professional experience in structural engineering planning, design, and construction of educational facilities.
• Education: A bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering or a related field from a recognized college or university. Candidates without a completed degree may substitute additional qualifying experience for up to two years of the education requirement, on a year-for-year basis. For example, a candidate with two years of college coursework in engineering plus two additional years of qualifying experience (12 years total) would meet this requirement.

Preferred

• A valid California Structural Engineer (SE) license.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Architectural and structural engineering practices for repairs, modernizations, and new construction of K-12 schools.
• Requirements of the Division of the State Architect (DSA) and California Department of Education (CDE).
• Building codes and industry standards as applied to school construction, including the California Building Code (CBC), CALGreen, Cal/OSHA/OSHA, ASHRAE, and ASTM.
• Structural and architectural building systems, materials, and construction costs.
• Preparing and reviewing structural standards, specifications, and related contract documents for school buildings and other structures.
• Sustainability programs, including LEED and CHPS (Collaborative for High Performance Schools).
• Commissioning processes and documentation requirements.
• Sustained attention to complex specifications, with clear, detailed review comments.
• Writing clear, concise technical reports and descriptions for engineering standards and project reviews.
• Working effectively with commissioned architects and engineers, District personnel, consultant staff, and public agency representatives.
• Strong verbal and written communication.
