City of Raleigh North Carolina is seeking a Pottery Studio Coordinator for Pullen Arts Center. The role involves loading/unloading kilns, documenting firings, mixing glazes, and keeping the studio clean, safe, and well-organized while supporting instruction for adults and youth.
You will also help plan studio socials, create content for newsletters, assist with clay deliveries and inventory, and ensure safety in the kiln and glaze rooms.
Pullen Arts Center reopened in 2021 following an extended closure for complete renovation and expansion, which also expanded to pottery studio operations to include 4,280 sq ft of space on three floors, 8 electric kilns and one gas kiln.
In coordination with the Pottery Studio Manager, the Pottery Studio Coordinator will work to load and unload student and patron pottery into and out of the studio kilns in a timely and safe manner, document all firings, perform basic studio troubleshooting and maintenance, mix studio glazes, help to keep studio clean and organized, create content for monthly studio user newsletter, assist with planning and implementation of studio socials, assist with clay deliveries and inventory management, assist in firing the gas kiln, and support instruction in both the adult clay classrooms and new youth pottery classroom.
The pottery Studio Coordinator will typically work 10-15 hours per week, divided into 2 or 3 shifts with Pullen Arts Center's hours of operation and will be responsible for keeping work matriculating through the studio kilns in a timely and safe manner. Through a helpful, welcoming, but firm presence the coordinator sets the tone for the open studio program. The coordinator must successfully communicate with students, members, volunteers, instructors and other staff to ensure smooth operations in the pottery studio. They are responsible for the safety of patrons and equipment through ensuring that the pottery studio, including the kiln room, glaze room, and outdoor kiln area is kept clean, organized and in compliance with City of Raleigh safety standards.
Candidate must be at least 21 years of age. A pleasant attitude, good customer service skills, independence, flexibility, organization, reliability, effective communication skills and creativity are essential. Candidate must have pottery experience, including basic experience mixing glazes, loading and unloading kilns, and generally keeping up a pottery studio. Candidate must be able to lift 25 lbs. regularly and 50 lbs. occasionally. Candidate must have awareness of safety issues that are common in pottery studios and best practices. Candidate must have the ability to responsibly wear a respirator and other required PPE. Previous experience working in a community studio is a plus. Previous experience firing a gas kiln is not required, but the candidate must be willing to learn. A flexible schedule and weekend availability will be a priority in hiring for this position.
