Job summary

Naperville Park District is seeking a Ceramics Instructor to lead and supervise participants in creating clay projects under the Program Manager.

You will guide students, demonstrate techniques, dry, load, and fire artwork, and educate participants on firing while maintaining a clean studio and effective communication with families and staff.

Qualifications

  • Minimum one year experience working with children or equivalent

Overview

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the Ceramics Instructor is responsible for instructing, leading, and supervising participants in creating clay projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Implement activities and provide supervision and instruction of ceramics participants during classes.
  2. Guide students through challenges as they create their piece.
  3. Dry, load, and fire student artwork.
  4. Educate participants on the firing process.
  5. Maintain an organized and generally clean studio.
  6. Communicate effectively with participants, guardians, and staff regarding rule infractions, questions, or concerns.
  7. Demonstrate and support District customer service standards.
  8. Maintain District equipment and facilities in a clean and orderly manner.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Distribute written communication as necessary or requested.
  • Record and communicate any difficult situations or behaviors to the Program Manager.
  • Notify the Program Manager when supplies need to be ordered or restocked.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of hand building techniques including slab, coil, and pinch pot construction, and using mold forms and the slab roller.
  • Knowledge of surface treatment techniques including slips, stains, and glazes.
  • Knowledge of porcelain, stoneware, and low fire clay bodies.
  • Knowledge of drying, loading, and firing artwork. Knowledge of firing practices including how to ramp a firing.
  • Ability to address complaints or resolve concerns.
  • Ability to work independently in day-to-day operations with general direction from supervisor.
Education and Experience
  • For children's classes: Minimum one (1) year experience working with children or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have experience creating clay artwork, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, First Aid, CPR, and AED certification within two (2) months of hire.
Special Considerations
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Subject to modified/flexible work schedules.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and or move objects weighing <= 30 lbs on a weekly basis. Lifting assistance is required when lifting > 30 lbs.
  • Regular onsite attendance is an essential function of this position.
