Overview
Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the Ceramics Instructor is responsible for instructing, leading, and supervising participants in creating clay projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement activities and provide supervision and instruction of ceramics participants during classes.
- Guide students through challenges as they create their piece.
- Dry, load, and fire student artwork.
- Educate participants on the firing process.
- Maintain an organized and generally clean studio.
- Communicate effectively with participants, guardians, and staff regarding rule infractions, questions, or concerns.
- Demonstrate and support District customer service standards.
- Maintain District equipment and facilities in a clean and orderly manner.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Distribute written communication as necessary or requested.
- Record and communicate any difficult situations or behaviors to the Program Manager.
- Notify the Program Manager when supplies need to be ordered or restocked.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of hand building techniques including slab, coil, and pinch pot construction, and using mold forms and the slab roller.
- Knowledge of surface treatment techniques including slips, stains, and glazes.
- Knowledge of porcelain, stoneware, and low fire clay bodies.
- Knowledge of drying, loading, and firing artwork. Knowledge of firing practices including how to ramp a firing.
- Ability to address complaints or resolve concerns.
- Ability to work independently in day-to-day operations with general direction from supervisor.
Education and Experience
- For children's classes: Minimum one (1) year experience working with children or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have experience creating clay artwork, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, First Aid, CPR, and AED certification within two (2) months of hire.
Special Considerations
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Subject to modified/flexible work schedules.
- Ability to lift, carry, and or move objects weighing <= 30 lbs on a weekly basis. Lifting assistance is required when lifting > 30 lbs.
- Regular onsite attendance is an essential function of this position.
