Job summary

Metro's Waste Prevention and Environmental Services (WPES) department seeks a Heavy Equipment Operator at the Metro South Transfer Station. You will operate heavy equipment, perform inspections, and support tipping floor activities while ensuring safety and efficiency in a busy public setting.

The ideal candidate has a High School Diploma or GED with 1–4 years of experience operating heavy equipment, plus a CDL.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED, and one to four years of experience operating heavy equipment in solid waste/transfer settings.
• CDL required; tank endorsement for street sweeper when applicable.
• Within one year: forklift, First Aid/CPR, asbestos awareness and bloodborne pathogens training.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
• Ability to operate safely around high‑traffic, hazardous materials and the public.
• Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, climb and lift up to 50 pounds (occasional over 50).

Responsibilities

• Safely operate heavy equipment including dozers, loaders, roll‑off trucks and street sweepers.
• Perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections and report defects or hazards.
• Carry out routine maintenance and maintain records.
• Maintain situational awareness in a busy public/industrial setting.
• Identify hazardous materials and follow disposal procedures.
• Assist with unloading, tipping floor recovery, and material transport on/offsite.
• Train staff on safe operation and potentially lead duties as assigned.
• Adhere to Metro safety policies and maintain a clean, safe transfer station.
• Support on‑site teamwork and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Follow established procedures while exercising good judgment.
