Job summary

The City of Alexandria seeks a Public Works Superintendent to lead its Capital Paving Program and essential services. You will manage street resurfacing, coordinate maintenance, and supervise contractors to meet safety and quality standards.

With a strong focus on strategic vision, you will secure grants, oversee budgets, and drive improvements in pavement asset management while leading a dedicated team in a collaborative, service-oriented environment.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED; 3 years in street or sewer construction and repair, with some supervisory experience.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to inspect construction sites; strong written and verbal communication.
• Experience in coordinating maintenance, budgeting, and safety.

Responsibilities

• Perform condition assessments and oversee street resurfacing; provide cost estimates for CIP funding.
• Supervise maintenance activities; assign work, monitor workflow, and resolve problems.
• Oversee contractors and secure grants; manage state and federal funds and maintain PCI models.
• Provide construction management and field inspection to ensure plans and safety.
• Prepare reports, estimates, and purchase orders; coordinate with other departments.
• Collaborate with City departments to align public works goals with City priorities.
• Build positive relationships with staff and the public; ensure customer service.
• Lead during emergencies, assess risks, and implement decisive solutions.
• Drive training programs to improve quality and employee satisfaction.
• Respond to emergencies with overtime as needed.
