Job summary

The City of Brownsville seeks an Engineering Construction Inspector I to review plans and perform field inspections for public street, drainage, and earthwork projects, ensuring compliance with the Construction Code. You will work independently in the field, apply technical judgement, and coordinate with utilities, contractors and city departments.

Bachelor's in Engineering (or associate with experience, or high school with experience) and a Valid Texas Driver’s License are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (no experience) or associate's degree plus two years of experience.
• High school graduation or GED plus four years of experience.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Reviews construction plans and performs field inspections for compliance.
• Monitors and coordinates street and drainage work with utilities and contractors.
• Investigates violations of the Construction Code and related ordinances.
• Approves alternate methods or materials within authority delegated by the City Engineer.
• Coordinates construction of City projects with utilities, City departments, contractors and sub-contractors.
• Responds to citizen complaints and requests for information about construction projects.
• Inspects in accordance with approved construction plans and review.
• Computes monthly estimates of work and recommends payments to contractors.
• Inspects streets, alleys, irrigation facilities, storm drains and permit construction for compliance.
• Inspects materials, grades, and other work to contract specifications.
• Safely operates tools and equipment in all weather conditions.
• Complies with state and local laws, safety rules, and city policies.
• Reports hazardous conditions immediately.
• Applies civil engineering principles including materials, testing, surveying and plan review.
