Job summary

The City of Kodiak in Alaska is seeking a full-time Equipment Operator I, II, or III in the Public Works Department. Under general supervision, this position leads, oversees, and participates in maintenance, repair, and construction work across streets, sewers, buildings, and related facilities; operates and maintains heavy equipment.

The Operator must hold a valid Alaska driver’s license and be able to obtain a CDL within six months; certifications vary by level.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; up to 1 year of specialized or technical training beyond high school.
  • 5–7 years of progressively responsible maintenance, utility or trades experience.
  • 3 years of operating a broad range of heavy equipment at journey level.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license or ability to obtain within 30 days.
  • CDL required or ability to obtain CDL within six months of hire.
  • ADEC Level 1 Operator certification (Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection) for Equipment Operator II; ADEC Level 2 for Equipment Operator III.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, oversee, and participate in maintenance, repair, and construction work for streets, sewers, public buildings, and related facilities.
  • Operate and maintain maintenance and construction tools and heavy equipment.
  • Perform technical tasks related to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Provide safe, efficient repair and maintenance services for City facilities.
