The City of Bedford is seeking a Public Works Technician responsible for maintaining and repairing the infrastructure of the city. This includes water distribution, wastewater systems, and road maintenance. Ideal candidates will possess experience in operating heavy machinery and hold the necessary licenses. The technician will work in various environmental conditions and must be physically capable of meeting the demands of the job.
SUMMARY
Directs, coordinates, and performs daily activities of workers engaged in installing, maintaining, and repairing facilities and infrastructure of the City of Bedford.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General
Physically locates underground and surface infrastructure using GIS applications, maps and engineered plans.
Originates and receives work requests through the work order system. Submits photographs, descriptions, documentation and other data into the system in a timely manner.
Operates and completes maintenance to a variety of hand tools and small equipment.
Operates and provides daily preventative maintenance and cleaning of heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, jetter trucks, trenchers, tractors, vacuum trucks and trailers, television inspection devices and other specialized equipment.
Assists other Divisions of the Public Works Department and other city Departments as needed
Will perform other assignments and handle special projects as directed.
Installs, maintains and removes work zone traffic control in accordance with standard operation procedures, TXMUTCD and engineered drawings. Leads and conducts flagging operations as needed for work with the ROW.
Regular and timely attendance is required as well as the ability to get along with others in a professional and cordial manner.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists the Crew Chief in supervision of assigned employees in the particular area of responsibility. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma / GED and two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Required for All Divisions:
Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement
Work Zone Traffic Control certification
Required for Utility Divisions:
TCEQ Class C Water Distribution License
TCEQ Class II Wastewater Collection License
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
The ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimal and fractional numbers. Ability to perform these operations using various units of money, weight, volume, length and area.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving variables in standardized situations.
SPECIALIZED KSA’S
Working knowledge of municipal infrastructure systems, including water distribution and wastewater collection, stormwater conveyance and street maintenance. Working knowledge of street, water, wastewater, and drainage maintenance procedures and equipment operating practices. Demonstrated ability to operate trenching and backfill equipment in congested underground environments and to perform routine equipment maintenance and problem solving. Must have or be able to complete a confined space training.

The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to work in areas where there is vehicular traffic nearby. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock. The employee regularly works in confined spaces and in trenches. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
