Operates light to medium equipment such as dump trucks, back hoes, street saws, and specialized equipment, etc. and a variety of hand tools in street and sewer construction and repairs. Also performs general labor as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Uses a front-end loader to load, unload and move materials into and out of lift or dump trucks at various sites as directed.
  • Performs labor duties involved in repairing and constructing concrete or asphalt streets, curbs, storm drains, etc. and employs equipment and accomplishes tasks such as sets forms, rakes asphalt, pour and smooth concrete, roll asphalt, jack hammers, etc.
  • Maintains and adjusts equipment used in day to day work activities.
  • Keeps simple records of work performed.
  • Operates equipment including dump trucks, asphalt distributors, rubber tire loader, mixer, rollers, and some minor backhoe work. Other small hand and power tools are used as needed.
  • Some reading, writing and math skills at a level needed to understand directions, equipment operating procedures, etc. and some experience of a similar type with the physical ability to perform assigned tasks. A working knowledge of equipment operations, safety rules.
  • Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
  • Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
  • Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.

  • Must have the ability to follow both written and verbal instructions
  • Must have the ability to complete tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, contribute as a team member and treat co-workers and customers with respect.
  • Ability to work any day of the week (weekends and weekdays) and long hours.

Education, Experience And Other Requirements

A minimum of six months experience operating trucks, fork lifts, etc. or six months experience in a skilled labor field such as asphalt paving, concrete forming, set up and finishing.

Must have regular and punctual attendance, flexibility to work overtime and respond to emergency situations during non-scheduled work hours.

Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check. Must have a valid Texas Class C license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy at time of hire. Must have a valid Texas Class B CDL license or have the ability to obtain within one year of hire and have an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.

Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen, functional assessment screening (Level 1), Titmus vision screening.

While performing the essential functions of this position, there will be routine and frequent exposure to:

  • Bright/dim light

Safety equipment such as gloves, goggles, hard hats, safety vests, steel-toe boots, back support belts, and seat belts are provided and must be worn as required by department procedures and good safety practices.

The employee is occasionally required to sit or smell. The employee must occasionally lift, shovel, and carry 25 to 60 pounds and exert up to 70 pounds of force. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
