Job summary

City of Hopewell, VA seeks a skilled trades supervisor to lead a maintenance, repair and construction crew for municipal facilities and systems including streets, utilities, drainage, buildings and grounds.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED with supervisory experience, plus a Virginia commercial driver's license; willingness to work weekends/holidays during emergencies; and a solid foundation in safety procedures and equipment operation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in public works facilities maintenance, repair, and construction including some supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Possession of a valid commercial driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• May require possession of or ability to obtain specific licenses and/or certifications depending on departmental assignment.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates, supervises, and participates in the work of an assigned crew in the repair, maintenance, or construction of municipal facilities and systems such as streets, utilities and drainage facilities, buildings and grounds, cemeteries, etc.
• Performs or assists in performing more difficult repair and construction tasks.
• Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions.
• Makes and adjusts work assignments; schedules work projects.
• Requisitions necessary equipment and materials; maintains inventory of materials and supplies.
• Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints.
• Ensures adherence to all safety requirements and policies.
• Assists with the recruitment and selection of department personnel; assigns, directs, trains and inspects the work of staff; rewards, disciplines, coaches, counsels and evaluates staff performance; develops staff schedules; recommends transfers, promotions, suspensions, terminations, and demotions.
• Supervises and participates in the operation of trucks, tractors, backhoes and other equipment in connection with assigned tasks.
