Job summary

Hopewell City School District is seeking a qualified Supervisor of Maintenance in Hopewell, Virginia. This leadership role oversees daily maintenance operations, skilled trades, and capital renewal planning to keep school facilities safe, reliable, and instructional-ready.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.
• Considerable progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance, building systems, construction, skilled trades, or related operations work.
• Supervisory, lead worker, project coordination, or foreman-level experience in a maintenance, construction, facilities, public works, school division, local government, industrial, commercial, healthcare, or other complex multi-building environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of multiple building systems and trades, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, roofing, drainage, building envelope, general construction, and facility repair practices.
• Demonstrated ability to lead maintenance staff, assign work, inspect completed work, hold employees accountable, and develop a culture of professionalism, safety, responsiveness, and quality.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, technical documents, construction drawings, shop drawings, manufacturer information, and architectural or engineering documents.
• Demonstrated knowledge of preventive maintenance, work order management, project estimating, contractor coordination, facility documentation, operational budgeting, and long-range maintenance planning.
• Demonstrated ability to assess facility conditions, identify system deficiencies, prioritize risk, and support capital repair, renewal, and replacement recommendations.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards, safe work practices, code-related requirements, and regulatory expectations associated with facilities maintenance, construction, and public building operations.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to prepare reports, scopes of work, recommendations, project updates, budget information, and maintenance documentation.
• Ability to organize multiple priorities, respond to urgent needs, make sound decisions, and lead operational change in a fast-paced school environment.

Responsibilities

• Leads, organizes, supervises, and evaluates the daily work of the maintenance department, including skilled trades, general maintenance personnel, contracted services, and other assigned staff.
• Establishes clear maintenance standards, work priorities, operating procedures, service expectations, and accountability systems that support safe, reliable, and well-maintained schools.
• Leads the continued development and implementation of a division-wide preventive and predictive maintenance program for building systems, equipment, site infrastructure, and critical facility assets.
• Reviews, prioritizes, and manages work orders, emergency repairs, deferred maintenance needs, seasonal maintenance work, and recurring building concerns using available operational data and service trends.
