Job summary

The City of St. Louis Park is seeking a facilities and maintenance worker to perform a range of duties including building upkeep, custodial services, and light reconstruction tasks.

You will operate light equipment, manage preventive maintenance, and respond to city work requests with safety and efficiency in mind. Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, 1 year of related experience, and a Class B CDL (tanker/air brake endorsements) or ability to obtain within specified

Qualifications

  • High school degree or equivalent is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience with manual labor and operation of light equipment and tools.
  • Valid Class B CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements, or ability to obtain within 6 months; Class A within 9 months.
  • Ability to read, follow and understand written policies, procedures, manuals and chemical information.
  • Ability to work independently and safely while following OSHA regulations.
  • Strong communication with diverse people and environments.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and travel to various locations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and basic repair services for city buildings and facilities (lighting, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, painting).
  • Carry out custodial tasks to keep buildings clean and safe (restrooms, floors, windows).
  • Assist with reconstruction/remodeling duties (flooring, ceilings, cubicles/office furniture).
  • Maintain equipment with preventive maintenance, parts inventory, and fuel records.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies and assigned duties, potentially leading small project crews.
  • May support other divisions and tasks as needed.

Job description

Perform various types of manual labor and operate equipment in all areas of facilities maintenance, public works and parks maintenance. Respond promptly to work requests from city staff related to building operations. Work in a variety of environments ensuring work is completed as scheduled and facilities are being operated and maintained effectively and efficiently. Responds to after-hour emergencies and essential tasks as needed.

This position will have a standard work week schedule of Monday - Thursday 10:00am-8:30pm.

  • Perform a variety of basic maintenance and repair services of city buildings and facilities to ensure proper operation and maintenance including, but not limited to:
    • Lighting, plumbing, heating/air-conditioning
    • Carpentry and painting
    • Building Management System software
    • Communication systems
    • Drywall repair, garage door repairs, and mechanical systems
  • Perform a variety of custodial services to keep city buildings and facilities clean, safe, and in good functioning order including, but not limited to:
    • Maintenance and cleaning, including maintenance of restroom facilities
    • Cleaning floors, shampooing carpet and vacuuming, window washing and dusting
    • Snow removal
  • Perform a variety of reconstruction/remodeling duties on city owned buildings and facilities including, but not limited to:
    • Flooring and ceilings
    • Communication lines
    • General construction, construction of cubicles/office furniture
  • Perform a variety of maintenance and mechanical services on equipment and the procurement of parts including, but not limited to:
    • General preventive maintenance (belts, oil, grease, filters, hoses)
    • Safety Inspections
    • Maintain an inventory of parts
    • Record management of parts and fuel consumption
    • Daily maintenance of equipment
  • Other duties
    • May be assigned to assist with duties in other divisions.
    • May be required to function as crew lead on short term projects as assigned.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience with manual labor and operation of light equipment and tools.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s license with tanker and air brake endorsements, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire; and ability to obtain Class A within 9 months of hire.
  • Ability to read, follow and understand written policies, procedures, manuals, chemical information, etc. as needed to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to:
    • Working dependently and safely carry out tasks, duties and responsibilities assigned and follow safety/OSHA regulations.
    • Communicate effectively with people from all cultures and backgrounds.
    • Physically perform essential functions and requirements of the position, including the ability to transport oneself to a variety of locations, climbing stairs and ladders, entering confined spaces, and operating hand and mechanical tools and equipment.
    • Work in and outdoor and indoor environment year-round, working in extreme temperatures for lengths of time.
    • Work a varied schedule as assigned.
  • Two (2) or more years’ experience of full-time employment in a similar position, with building/construction trades, or with equipment used in the position.
  • Certificates and licensing in related areas.
