Job summary

Calhoun County Government is seeking an HR Specialist to provide dedicated support to the Sheriff’s Office, including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, compliance, workforce planning, and wellness initiatives.

The role focuses on structured onboarding, proactive performance management, and modernized HR processes while ensuring adherence to laws and collective bargaining agreements in a fast-paced public safety environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field.
• Minimum of two years HR experience; public sector or law enforcement experience preferred.
• Knowledge of employment law, labor relations, and HR best practices.
• Experience supporting recruitment, employee relations, and onboarding programs.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
• Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HR systems.
• Valid Michigan driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Provides backup support to broader HR functions as needed.
• Supports recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, and performance management processes.
• Ensures compliance, documentation, and reporting for investigations and leave.
• Coordinates leave administration and return-to-work processes.
• Partners with HR leadership on workforce planning and budgeting.
• Supports data tracking and HR metrics to inform decisions.
