Job summary

Office of the Attorney General in Virginia seeks an Assistant Attorney General for Correctional Litigation. The role litigates in state and federal courts involving inmates’ rights and related claims. You will advise state agencies on emerging issues and respond to FOIA requests, with opportunities for appellate work.

The position reports to the Section Chief and may require travel to Richmond, Abingdon, Fairfax, or Virginia Beach offices.

Qualifications

Admission to the Virginia State Bar.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in time management.
The ability to work well under pressure and adjust priorities without close supervision.
A willingness to assist and supervise others.
The ability to think outside of the box and apply common-sense.
The flexibility to work both independently and as a team member.

Responsibilities

Represent and advise the Virginia Department of Corrections, Department of Juvenile Justice, and Parole Board in state and federal courts.
Litigate cases involving inmates’ constitutional rights, including freedom of speech, religious liberties, and due process, as well as ADA and VTCA claims.
Advise client agencies on emerging legal issues and respond to subpoenas and FOIA requests.
Possible continued appellate work on cases appealed after trial court disposition.
Other duties as assigned by the Section Chief.
