Job summary

The City of Austin Employees' Retirement System (COAERS) is seeking an Accountant to support payroll, accounts payable, retirement benefit administration, and financial reporting. This role emphasizes accuracy, internal controls, and collaborative work across departments.

Reporting to the CFO, the Accountant will handle payroll, banking operations, and general ledger functions, ensuring timely reporting and compliance with regulations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field required or equivalent experience.
• 2+ years of relevant work experience preferred in public or private sector accounting.
• CPA designation or progress toward is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Process and reconcile biweekly staff payroll, including new hire setup and ACH transmissions.
• Review payroll calculations for accuracy and legal compliance; respond to inquiries.
• Verify, process, and reconcile accounts payable and maintain vendor records.
• Administer monthly retirement benefit payments and monitor for discrepancies.
• Perform bank reconciliations and maintain cash records with internal controls.
• Prepare general ledger journal entries and assist with month-end close.
