Job summary

UNC Health Care in North Carolina seeks a Public Safety Specialist (non-sworn, unarmed) to provide a welcoming, safety-focused presence at hospital access points and within the Public Safety Communications Center. This per diem role supports UNC Lenoir Health Care across the system.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, customer service experience, and the ability to communicate with patients, visitors, staff and emergency personnel.

Qualifications

• Ability to stay calm and communicate clearly during stressful or emergency situations.

• Ability to operate assigned safety and access control systems after orientation.

Responsibilities

• Provide a welcoming, professional presence at hospital access points and within the Public Safety Communications Center.
• Support Public Safety operations and assist emergency personnel as needed.
• Operate safety, access control, and monitoring systems following orientation and training.
• Maintain composure and clear communication during high-stress situations.

The Public Safety Specialist is a non-sworn, unarmed Public Safety team member responsible for providing a welcoming, professional, and safety-focused presence at designated hospital access points and within the Public Safety Communications Center.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Previous experience in customer service, healthcare, communications, dispatch, public safety support, hospitality, or a related field preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, staff, and emergency personnel.
• Ability to remain calm and communicate clearly during stressful or emergency situations.
• Basic computer and technology skills.
• Ability to learn and operate assigned communications, weapons detection, access control, camera, and reporting systems.
• Ability to successfully complete required departmental orientation and training.
