Job summary

UNC Health is seeking a Public Safety Specialist to provide a welcoming, professional and safety-focused presence at hospital access points and within the Public Safety Communications Center.

This per diem, onsite role requires effective communication with patients, visitors, staff and emergency personnel, plus basic computer and system skills. Training and orientation are provided to ensure readiness with safety protocols.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Experience in customer service, healthcare, dispatch or public safety support is preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff and emergency personnel.
• Ability to stay calm and communicate clearly during stressful or emergency situations.
• Basic computer and technology skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide a welcoming, professional, safety-focused presence at designated hospital access points.
• Operate and monitor Public Safety communications and safety equipment.
• Assist with safety protocols and reporting as required.
• Collaborate with staff and emergency responders as needed.

The Public Safety Specialist is a non-sworn, unarmed Public Safety team member responsible for providing a welcoming, professional, and safety-focused presence at designated hospital access points and within the Public Safety Communications Center.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Previous experience in customer service, healthcare, communications, dispatch, public safety support, hospitality, or a related field preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, staff, and emergency personnel.
• Ability to remain calm and communicate clearly during stressful or emergency situations.
• Basic computer and technology skills.
• Ability to learn and operate assigned communications, weapons detection, access control, camera, and reporting systems.
• Ability to successfully complete required departmental orientation and training.
