JOB PURPOSE:
Under general supervision, supervises Corporals responsible for first-line supervision of Public Safety Officers. Enforces State and Department policies for the protection and security of youth, staff, visitors, and property. Serves as the Shift Supervisor in the absence of the Corporal.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts routine safety and security checks of buildings and grounds.
- Patrols Department property.
- Searches for and apprehends AWOLS, assists in controlling youth disturbances, and notifies management of property issues.
- Supervises, assigns tasks, and conducts staff appraisals and counseling.
- Ensures officers receive required training and prepares schedules for adequate coverage.
- Prepares and reviews reports, operates communication networks and vehicles, and ensures proper maintenance.
- Transports youth as necessary and investigates incidents such as escapes, accidents, drugs, theft, contraband, and youth abuse.
- May act as shift supervisor in the absence of a higher authority.
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the Director of Public Safety and/or the Inspector General.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma and experience in patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may substitute for law enforcement experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council per South Carolina law.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Proficient in verbal and written communication for report writing.
- Ability to prioritize during high-stress situations.
- Perform police work including maintaining order, searching, and being alert for illegal activities.
- Respond to complaints and conduct investigations.
- Escort unruly visitors and perform juvenile transports.
- Provide a safe environment for all within DJJ facilities.
- Work under general supervision, use judgment in routine matters, and be on-call 24/7 for emergencies.
- Possess high morals and character, able to withstand a background check.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs., sit, stand, walk for extended periods, and work varied hours.
- Handle confidential information and occasionally travel overnight.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma and 3 years of patrol or investigative experience.
- SCCJA Certified Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer.
