Job description

Job Responsibilities

1. Under the general supervision of the Shift Lieutenant, responsible for the overall supervision of subordinate security personnel assigned to the housing units, and for the supervision, custody, and control of all inmates assigned to the housing units.
2. Makes routine inspections of the living areas for compliance with security, safety, and sanitation standards.
3. Conducts investigations of alleged misconduct by inmates and security personnel within the area of responsibility.
4. Assists in conducting formal and informal inmate counts.
5. Supervises the job performance, conduct, and appearance of assigned security personnel and prepares employee evaluations.
6. Counsels, recommends disciplinary actions, and trains subordinate staff to meet required performance standards.
7. Prepares reports as needed or required.

Qualifications and Requirements

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

• Eighteen (18) months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the South Carolina Department of Corrections Training Academy and successfully complete the Basic Supervisory Course within six (6) months of employment.
