Job summary

Northfield Hospital + Clinics is seeking a Public Safety Officer to safeguard patients, staff and visitors across the Northfield campus and affiliated sites in southern Minnesota.

Responsibilities include high-visibility patrols, incident response, cooperation with law enforcement, handling hazardous waste procedures, and ensuring access control while maintaining patient confidentiality in crisis situations. Shift work and on-site presence required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Defensive Tactics certification including baton/handcuffs or NH+C training within six months of hire.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider (or within six months of hire).
  • IAHSS Basic Certification (or within six months of hire).
  • MN Driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to communicate in English proficiently in healthcare settings.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a highly visible security profile through campus patrols.
  • Handle hazardous pharmaceutical waste per hospital protocol and respond to spills.
  • Respond to calls from NH+C facilities in Northfield and nearby towns.
  • Respond to Emergency Response Guide activations/Codes.
  • Provide escort, access requests, and vehicle assistance as needed on campus.
  • Assist law enforcement during investigations with information exchange.
  • Receive training for chemical spills and patient decontamination.
  • Respond to, investigate, and document security incidents if possible.
  • Maintain security and alarm response by checking doors/windows and locking as required.

Title

Public Safety Officer

Summary

The Public Safety Office promotes and maintains a safe and secure hospital campus environment by providing safety and security services to Northfield Hospital + Clinics (NH+C), patients, visitors and employees.

Compensation

We are committed to providing wage ranges for all open positions. Please note that the specific compensation for this role will be determined based on experience, education and internal equity considerations. The hourly wage range for this position is $21.08-$29.76. This range reflects the base rate of this position.

Key Accountabilities
  • Maintain a highly visible profile through frequent patrols of campus property to prevent, detect and address unacceptable behavior.
  • Handles hazardous pharmaceutical waste in accordance with hospital protocol, including properly disposing of hazardous wastes, ensuring hazardous waste disposal containers are closed, and recognizing any hazardous waste spills or emergencies and contacting the hospital’s hazardous waste coordinator accordingly.
  • Respond to calls for service from off-site NH+C facilities in Northfield, Lakeville, Farmington, Faribault, and Lonsdale.
  • Respond to all Emergency Response Guide activations/Codes.
  • Provide assistance to the campus by responding to calls for service to include escorts, access requests, and vehicle assistance.
  • Assist law enforcement agencies in criminal investigations through exchange of information.
  • Receive training and respond to chemical spills and decontamination of patients.
  • Respond to, investigate, resolve (if possible) and document reported security incidents/complaints.
  • Maintain security and alarm response on hospital campus buildings through active foot patrol by checking, locking, and rechecking all exterior and interior doors and windows.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Defensive Tactics certification that includes the use of a baton and handcuffs. (and/or NH+C defensive tactics training must be completed within six months of hire).
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (NVCI).
  • Current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Certification (or must be obtained within six months of hire)
  • Possess Basic Certification from the International Association for Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) (or must be obtained within six months of hire).
  • Maintain valid MN Driver’s license and driving record that meets NH+C driving standards.
  • Ability and willingness to effectively deal with difficult and sometimes violent people and make decisions quickly while maintaining composure in the crisis situations.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to interact with Administration, staff, patients, residents and visitors.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write English proficiently to ensure safe and effective communication in a healthcare environment.
  • Must be reliable, conscientious and able to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two-year college degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, security or related field
  • One year of experience in law enforcement or security work
  • Bilingual in Spanish or another language.
  • Previous hospital security experience
Schedule
  • Varying Days/Shifts: 6:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., and 10:00 p.m.-6:00 a.m.;
  • Minimum commitment of one shift per month
