Position: Public Safety Officer I - Armed
Location: Illinois Masonic Medical Center (IMMC); Chicago's North Side, near Wrigleyville Neighborhood
Full Time; 2nd ShiftHours: 3pm-11:30pm
Major Responsibilities- Provides security services with professionalism, fairness, and compassion in challenging circumstances, adhering to policies, procedures, and training. Presents a professional and approachable appearance to inspire confidence among patients, visitors, and staff. Maintains alertness, ethics, and compliance with safety rules. Keeps department uniforms and equipment in good condition.
- Performs interior and exterior patrols to ensure safety, including inspections, hazard identification, fire safety audits, valuables management, and contraband searches. Assists with directions, information, and physical help. Manages traffic, monitors conduct, and questions unauthorized persons.
- Responds to workplace violence, threats, and service calls involving combative or threatening individuals. Acts as a de-escalation resource.
- Responds to emergencies like infant abduction, fire, or active threats. Acts swiftly and physically when necessary to prevent injury.
- Investigates incidents on property, documents reports accurately, and escalates complaints appropriately.
- Conducts liaison rounds, fosters partnerships, and delivers security awareness education to staff.
- Coordinates with law enforcement and first responders, ensuring policy compliance and safety during prisoner transport.
- Maintains current training standards, including radio communication, de-escalation, CPR, restraints, Taser use, and equipment handling.
License/Registration/Certification Required- Healthcare Security Certification (CHSO) from IAHSS within two years of appointment. Recertification not required.
- Valid driver’s license.
- FOID Card or CCW license from Illinois.
- Meet Illinois licensing requirements and obtain Firearm Control Card within 90 days.
- Certified in Taser use within 90 days and periodically thereafter.
Education Required- High School Diploma or GED
Experience Required- Typically 1 year in security, public safety, or customer service, with experience in responding to emergencies and resolving risk-related issues.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Illinois armed course completion with pistol endorsement.
- Willingness to carry a department-issued firearm, maintained by the officer.
- Ability to pass annual firearm qualification with a score of 70% or higher.
- Mature judgment, courteous demeanor, quick assessment skills, and effective communication.
- Proficiency with computers (Word, Excel, web, database).
- Must pass background, drug, physical, and psychological screenings.
- Ability to physically restrain and defend when necessary.
- Effective communication skills, including radio and phone.
- Appropriate interaction with staff, patients, and visitors, especially in difficult situations.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions- Sit, stand, walk, drive; lift up to 35 lbs; push/pull with 35 lbs of force; operate firearms safely.
- Correctable 20/20 vision.
- Exposure to hazards; protective clothing as needed.
- Operate necessary equipment.
- Frequent exposure to aggressive behavior and stress.
- Must be physically fit to walk facilities, restrain individuals, and assist with patient lifting.
