Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, IA, is seeking a Public Safety Officer to join our Public Safety team. The role provides 24/7 campus coverage with a 4 PM–Midnight shift, Saturday through Wednesday, promoting a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, strong interpersonal and customer service skills, and a commitment to serving a diverse university community.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license.
• First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other non-traditional hours as needed.
• Associate degree preferred.
• Previous experience in campus safety, security, law enforcement, military service, emergency response, or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

• Patrol campus buildings, parking lots, and grounds to ensure safety and security.
• Enforce campus security and parking policies, including building access and key control procedures.
• Respond to emergencies, assist injured individuals, and coordinate with local responders.
• Conduct investigations, complete incident reports, and maintain security records.
• Monitor life-safety systems, including fire, intrusion, and access control systems.
• Perform routine inspections of campus safety equipment and security measures.
• Provide security escorts, support campus events, and collaborate on safety initiatives.
• Participate in safety training and emergency drills.
• Deliver excellent customer service with a visible, approachable campus presence.

Public Safety Officer

Mount Mercy University is seeking a dedicated and service-oriented Public Safety Officer to join our Public Safety team. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Public Safety Officers work a non-standard schedule and assist in providing 24/7 campus safety coverage. This position would cover hours from 4 PM to Midnight, Saturday through Wednesday. The starting pay is $16.50 an hour.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative professional who demonstrates sound judgment, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to serving a diverse university community.

Key Responsibilities

• Patrol campus buildings, parking lots, and grounds to help ensure the safety and security of people and property.


• Enforce campus security and parking policies, including building access and key control procedures.


• Respond to emergencies, provide assistance to injured individuals, and coordinate with local emergency responders when necessary.
