The City of Urbandale is accepting applications for Police Officer. Under the general direction of the Sergeant/Captain, Police Officers perform law enforcement and crime‑prevention services to protect life and property in the Urbandale community. Officers also conduct investigative work in preparation for arrests and criminal prosecution. The department is a CALEA‑accredited agency that emphasizes community relations and customer service.

• Interpret and enforce municipal, state, and federal regulations, codes, laws, and ordinances.
• Respond promptly to calls for service, including walk‑in complaints.
• Conduct uniformed preventive patrols around the clock.
• Investigate crimes and prepare reports on matters such as major crimes, traffic incidents, theft, disputes, intoxication, security alarms, etc.
• Prepare supplementary reports for complaints and investigations.
• Determine and execute arrests; process arrestees, search and seize property, collect evidence, interview witnesses, transport offenders, testify in court.
• Identify and correct safety hazards on public roadways; conduct crash analysis, accident investigations; assist stalled motorists; direct traffic; issue citations.
• Partner with citizens, neighborhood groups, schools, and agencies for problem resolution and education; provide referrals, welfare checks, unlock vehicles, offer law‑enforcement education, animal‑control assistance, civil‑code enforcement, etc.
• Assist in emergency situations, including Fire and EMS calls; monitor severe weather conditions.
• Inspect and maintain vehicles and all law‑enforcement equipment.
• Participate in specialized units such as Accident Investigation, Field Training, Firearms Instruction, Bike Patrol, Suburban Narcotics, Suburban Emergency Response Team, and other task forces.
• Direct and supervise Urbandale Police Reserve Officer(s) as assigned.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agencies for offender apprehension and investigations.
• Perform any other duties assigned.

• Assist in receiving, searching, booking, fingerprinting, photographing, and supervising prisoners.
• Order and maintain equipment and supplies.

• High school diploma or GED.
• Preference for candidates with at least an Associate’s degree in any accredited college or university or two years of active military service.
• Minimum age of twenty years on or before the application deadline.
• U.S. citizenship at the time of application.
• No felony convictions or convictions involving moral turpitude.
• Uncorrected vision not less than 20/100 in each eye, corrected to 20/20.
• Obtain Iowa Police Officer certification within twelve months of employment.
• NCIC certification within twelve months of employment.
• CPR/First Aid/AED certifications within twelve months of employment.
• Valid Iowadriver’s license.
• All certifications required by the I.L.E.A.
• Meet I.L.E.A.’s standards of acceptance.
• Meet all physical standards specified by the Police Retirement System.
• Perform physical functions while wearing personal protective equipment.
• Reside within a 50‑mile radius of the Urbandale Police Department.
