Position: Public Safety Officer

Department: Public Safety

Schedule: All Shifts

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

1. Perform daily operational functions as requested by the Public Safety Supervisor or Desk Officer to meet BMC's operational needs efficiently.
2. Respond promptly to all stat requests, emergency, contingency, or disaster situations, and assigned calls.
3. Document incidents accurately and inform the Desk Officer of actions taken.
4. Complete incident reports clearly and submit them before shift end.
5. Utilize strong customer service skills and community policing philosophies to build relationships with the community.
6. Manage complex, emotionally charged situations, investigate suspicious activity, and take safety or police actions as needed.
7. Investigate reports of criminal activity, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and document findings.
8. Take appropriate police actions when necessary, following training and legal requirements.
9. Use de-escalation techniques and physical force when appropriate to contain threats or assaults.
10. Provide escorts for patients, visitors, staff, and cash transfers as requested.
11. Patrol BMC property, document deficiencies, and violations of policies.
12. Manage access control, verify identification, enforce visitor policies, and inspect outgoing materials.
13. Assist with public inquiries courteously and professionally.
14. Perform Public Safety Desk Officer duties, including coordinating activities, assigning staff, and monitoring security systems.

Job Requirements

Education: HS Diploma required; A.S. in Criminal Justice or equivalent preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts.

Experience: 6 months to 1 year in security and customer service preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Detailed in responsibilities and duties.
