JOB TITLE

Dispatcher

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION

Public Safety

REPORT TO

Work is performed under the general supervision of a Records Bureau supervisor and the direct supervision of an Operations Platoon commander/supervisor.

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION

To receive calls for service, dispatch and monitor Public Safety units, perform specialized clerical and record keeping functions, maintain the communications center in an orderly and efficient manner; and to perform other related work as required.

DESCRIPTION

Receive emergency and non-emergency calls for service via telephone, text, radio and in person.
Dispatch unit(s) and relay appropriate information via telephone, radio and in person.
§ Monitor several radio frequencies simultaneously, dispatching/receiving information to/from police, fire and EMS units.

§ Operate telephone call processing equipment, E911 displays and handsets, computer terminals, fax machines, and other office equipment.

§ Operate and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of CAD, LEIN, NCIC and CLEMIS systems.

§ Make proper entries in CAD and maintain daily activity logs.

§ Assist citizens and other city employees as requested.

§ Successfully complete all assigned training in a timely manner. Maintain the necessary certifications as prescribed by the State of Michigan 911 Committee

§ File and maintain required department records and reports.

§ Collect fees, when appropriate, and issue vehicle release slips

§ Assist in training new dispatchers, as required.

§ Write clear and concise reports and communications.

§ Perform other records, clerical, dispatch, and information request functions as required.

OTHER REGULATIONS

Because of the nature of Public Safety work and the role of the Dispatcher in supporting such operations, certain regulations are placed upon employees in this classification. Applicants should be aware of some of these regulations:

Duty Hours – Dispatcher/clerks work rotating shifts with varying leave days and are subject to a variety of hours. Work on holidays and overtime work may be required.
Outside Work – Because of certain department restrictions and the varying hours worked, it is difficult to procure extensive outside employment. Any such outside employment must meet departmental regulations and be approved by the department.
Job Performance – Dispatchers are required to always meet and maintain a high standard of overall job performance due to the critical nature of their job in the overall response and safety of first responders (Law enforcement, Fire, EMS)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITES

Must be 18 years of age.
Ability to type 30 words per minute with an acceptable accuracy rate
Possess good organizational skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Diploma from an accredited high school or GED
§ No prior training or experience as a dispatcher is required

SALARY RANGE - This is a full-time position in a unionized environment with a salary range of $26.3347-$29.4466/HR. (Can be hired up to the 3rd step with experience)
