Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with Windows and varied software applications.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Knowledge and skills in managing and prioritizing emergency communication incidents.
  • Knowledge of basic public safety communications concepts and fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of resource information in the Communications Center or university.
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Excellent public relations/customer service skills.
  • Ability to pass rigid background check.
  • Ability to pass a psychological examination.
  • Ability to perform well under stress in a calm, efficient manner.
  • Ability to complete dispatcher’s certification course.
  • Ability to analyze emergencies and solve problems.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with clear radio voice.
  • Ability to provide professional/community-oriented service.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with teams or independently.
  • Ability to comply with CJIS policies.
  • Dependable work ethic, integrity and accountability.
  • Valid driver's license with GMU vehicle requirements.
  • Must obtain NCIC/VCIN Full Access certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must obtain NCIC/VCIN operator certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provides first responder care to public and other responders.
  • Calls and radio dispatching to protect life and property; creates records in CAD.
  • Triages calls and messages; provides instructions and coordinates responses.
  • Interacts with fire, medical, and mental health services as needed.
  • Maintains familiarity with local geography and building layouts.
  • Monitors and operates emergency communications equipment.
  • Disseminates information via radio and FCC-compliant channels.
  • Operates CAD, RMS, and MDT interfaces; enters and retrieves data.
  • Maintains confidential records and FOIA-compliant documentation.
  • Monitors alarm systems, CCTV, and access control; coordinates responses.
  • Accesses databases with care and maintains confidentiality.
  • Maintains 24/7 operations as essential personnel; adheres to training requirements.
  • Renders aid to victims and coordinates with partners; crisis intervention when needed.
  • Ensures training and certification standards are met; performs other duties as assigned.
