Job summary

Jackson County Public Library is seeking an entry-level Library Assistant to support patrons and staff. You will process and prepare materials for circulation, assist with the library catalog, and help maintain accurate item and user records in the ILS.

You'll provide public service, answer questions in person and remotely, and help with programs, marketing, and outreach while adhering to JCPL policies. Evening and weekend shifts are required; some travel may be involved.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• One year of customer service experience required.
• One year of related library experience preferred.
• Familiarity with library circulation, catalog, and Dewey Decimal Classification systems.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends.
• Possession of a valid NC driver license is not required but may be beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Answers general information questions in person, by phone, and electronically.
• Assists in locating materials and using the library catalog.
• Assists with use of library equipment and technology.
• Provides circulation assistance to patrons, including checkout and card issuance.
• Maintains confidentiality and privacy of protected information.
• Schedules use of library resources and meeting rooms.
• Provides reference service and readers’ advisory services.
• Assists with planning, delivery, and promotion of programs and displays.
• Reviews and edits catalog holdings information and catalog records for errors.
• Processes and repairs library materials and routes recommendations for new materials.
• Performs opening and closing procedures and shelves materials.
• Performs minor repairs to equipment and prepares reports/statistics.
• Supports collaborations with library systems and community partners.
• Evening and weekend work required. Some travel may be required.
