Northwestern Mutual is seeking an Assistant Director of Software Engineering for Public Investments. You will own end-to-end technical quality and delivery across UI, services, and data platforms, while leading engineers and partnering with product managers and stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable solutions.

You will set direction, raise standards, and develop engineering talent, ensuring API/data integrations are resilient and data warehouse performance is optimized.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software and data engineering experience.
• Experience leading engineers directly or readiness to step into people leadership.
• Strong experience with modern web apps (React) and backend REST APIs.
• Experience with data warehousing, performance tuning, and data governance.
• Ability to mentor engineers and elevate engineering maturity.

Responsibilities

• Define and communicate technical direction for Public Investments, aligned with architecture, security, and delivery standards.
• Translate product outcomes into practical technical designs and plans.
• Lead frontend (React), backend (Node.js, REST APIs), and data platforms (dbt, Snowflake) with clear interfaces.
• Drive decomposition and sequencing for initiatives across apps, APIs, pipelines, and warehouse models.
• Establish engineering standards for code quality, testing, CI/CD, observability, and reliability.
• Own technical risk management, including architecture, integration, performance, and security risks.
• Ensure resilient API/data integrations and good data lineage across teams.
• Improve data reliability and warehouse performance through design and governance.
