Job summary

The City of Bismarck is seeking a proactive Engagement Officer in the Administration Department to disseminate public information across platforms including the website and social media. The role ensures communications align with the city’s values and strategic plan, engaging residents, staff, partners, and media.

Qualifications

• A deep understanding of website, content management, and social media platforms.
• Strong writing, editing and communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• The ability to stay flexible with an ever-evolving technology landscape and task list.
• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• Experience to understand basic principles relevant to major duties, usually via apprenticeship/internship or 1–2 years in a similar role.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a North Dakota driver’s license for the relevant vehicle type.
• Willingness to pursue continuing education (FEMA, TEEX, EMI, CDP, etc.).
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Familiarity with municipal government operations is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies, schedules, and campaigns.
• Monitor, listen to, and respond to user comments and messages to foster an active community.
• Assist in the management of social media, website content and other external-facing content.
• Serve as liaison between the City of Bismarck and media, coordinating interviews and pitching stories.
• Provide support during emergencies to produce timely communications under the Communications Strategist.
• Analyze engagement data and track KPIs to inform city communications.
• Prepare and edit communications and presentations for the City Commission and departments.
