Job summary

The City of Indianapolis and Marion County seeks an attorney to provide effective representation of indigent clients charged in misdemeanors, juvenile, appellate courts, or civil contempt. Independent judgment is exercised within state and federal law, with support from a division chief and a collaborative team.

Required is a Juris Doctorate and license to practice law, plus strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.

Must have a valid driver's license.
Must comply with Indiana Public Defender Commission standards.

Responsibilities

Appear in court to represent indigent clients in criminal, civil contempt, CHINS, or juvenile appellate matters.
Review case facts, conduct pretrial motion practice, and handle depositions.
Consult with clients, interview witnesses, and engage experts as needed.
Negotiate case dispositions with opposing counsel, including plea agreements.
Communicate with clients regularly by phone, in person, and during jail consultations.
Update court files and keep clients and families informed of progress.
Delegate assignments to paralegals and investigators as appropriate.
Collaborate with social workers on multidisciplinary strategies.
Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Other duties or responsibilities as assigned.
