The anticipated start date for this position is October 1, 2026. This position is located in Chowan County, North Carolina. Work hours and schedules may vary based on program needs and may differ from the hours reflected in the job description. Applicants should be prepared to work a flexible schedule as needed to support the Truck Driver Training Program.
Salary is commensurate with education and relevant experience.
The role of the PT Truck Driver Training (TDT) Instructor is to supervise and train students in proper driving techniques and administer Commercial Driver's License (CDL) testing as a third party examiner for the State of North Carolina. This position requires flexibility working during the hours of 8:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday on a regular basis.
The PT TDT Instructor receives general supervision from Program Coordinator/Instructor, TDT.
- Provides accurate and timely information concerning program availability and courses.
- Orients new students.
- Teaches classes; counsels and advises students.
- Maintains all class records.
- Participate in program review and planning processes.
- Participate in program recruitment activities and marketing initiatives that promote enrollment.
- Works as an integral team member of the Workforce Development Division.
- Maintain a positive attitude.
- Follow all policies and procedures of the TDT Program and College.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Learn methods and techniques related to training of students
- Work with and train students from varying backgrounds and cultures
- Train students using the methods and techniques prescribed by the TDT Program
- Follow the chain of command as it pertains to department structure
- Other duties as assigned.
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must hold a current, valid Class A CDL Driver License with Air Brakes Endorsement.
- Three (3) years of driving experience in the commercial transportation industry as an Over The Road licensed commercial driver.
- Must be 21 years of age.
Preferred:
- Associate Degree.
- Online teaching experience at a community college or four-year college.
- Five (5) years of driving experience in the commercial transportation industry as an Over The Road licensed commercial driver.
- Endorsements of Twin-trailers and Tanks.
- Experience as a driver trainer.
Required Ability to:
- Ability to meet the following North Carolina State CDL qualifications:
- 1. Not been convicted of a felony convicted or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude in the ten years preceding the date of application.
- 2. Not had a revocation or suspension of driver's license in the two years immediately preceding the date of application.
- 3. Not have had convictions for moving violations totaling seven or more points within three years of application.
- Record and accurately calculate grades, mileage and student driving time.
- Evaluate student calculations.
- Read and write English.
- Speak English understandably so that persons can clearly and easily understand directions.
- Speak distinctly and at sufficient volume to be heard by the student driver over the noise the noise of a running engine.
- Work in a fast-paced environment.
- Be a team player.
Required Knowledge of:
- Federal and State Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration guidelines, North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) commercial driver CDL qualifications and licensing requirements.
