Job summary

Arizona Western College is seeking a part-time Facilities Maintenance Technician to perform custodial, grounds, and building maintenance across campus. You will support electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, and related trades while ensuring safety and compliance with college policies.

Job description

Summary of Function

Completes and accomplishes all duties, cleaning and maintenance projects aligned with the trades department within Facilities Management.

Typical Duties
  • Serves Students. Performs custodial duties such as cleaning dorm rooms and bathrooms; cleaning refrigerators; washing windows; waxing floors; moving furniture; vacuuming carpets; shampooing carpets; replacing light bulbs; restocking toilet paper; cleaning outside of building including walls, sidewalks, and stairs.
  • Performs HVAC duties such as replacing dual shaft electric motors; cleaning coils and straightening fins; removing, cleaning, painting, and reinstalling grills; removing, repairing, and reinstalling ceiling grid and tiles; cleaning above ceiling tiles; washing and lubricating blower motors and blower wheels; verifying proper operation of thermostats; cleaning strainers and blowing down plugged coils and venting trapped air. Assists in any hot work.
  • Performs electrician duties such as cleaning substations and mechanical rooms, testing and repairing lights and signs, and replacing ballasts and batteries.
  • Performs carpenter duties such as patching holes in wall, painting, recoating roofs, patching roofs, replacing bathroom fixtures, and patching flooring or carpet.
  • Performs groundskeeping duties such as trimming and pruning trees and plants, mowing and edging campus lawns and playing fields, sweeping and painting parking lots, picking up trash and debris from campus grounds, digging holes to uncover utilities and sprinkler lines, moving rock, and assisting in concrete repairs.
  • Supports and participates in strategic planning initiatives, and performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Entry-level experience or higher in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, or other related mechanical trades
Additional Eligibility Requirements
  • Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination or have taken the vaccine either prior to employment or during the first week of work hired. (AWC can provide the Hepatitis Vaccination on the first week of work.)
  • Arizona Driver’s License or Equivalent

  • Work flexible schedule to meet the program, department, and/or institutional needs, which may include Fridays, nights, and/or weekends
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret, apply, and follow college policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of or ability to maintain organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures
  • Knowledge of workplace safety standards and safe work practices related to facilities maintenance
  • Knowledge of basic tools, equipment, and materials used in custodial, grounds, and building maintenance
    functions
  • Skill in current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software,
    specifically Microsoft Office applications, Windows, college system platforms, software, and
    applications especially those specific to the department operations
  • Skill and ability to be self-directed and to manage one’s own time
  • Skill in performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
  • Skill in operating and maintaining maintenance equipment and hand/power tools
  • Skill in performing preventative maintenance and minor repairs across multiple trade areas
  • Ability to complete all departmental and/or institutional mandatory training or development
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion, with close attention to
    detail
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to provide assistance in a professional, civil, and supportive manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, in writing, and in a public setting, and to relate to others in a
    professional manner
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of protected information and follow FERPA and privacy guidelines

  • Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate actions to resolve problems using
    independent judgment and decision-making processes
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing, bending, and working at heights

    of the organization, students, and the public
  • Working environment includes various locations across the service district, with varying noise levels, indoor and/or outdoor locations as needed to support program, department or institutional needs
  • Must be able to perform duties in a variety of weather conditions
  • Occasionally inside office environment with normal noise and lighting levels
Physical Demands
  • Prolonged periods of standing and/or walking
  • May lift, carry, push, and/or pull, at times a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Must be able to bend, sit, kneel, and drive to perform maintenance duties around the campus
  • Must be able to navigate various departments of the organization's physical premises
Travel
  • May be required to travel to other locations using various modes of private, commercial, or fleet transportation, and as needed to support program, department and institutional needs
