Job Summary

The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner will rotate through a variety of clinical environments focusing on critical care medicine. They will train for six months prior to joining the Pulmonary Critical Care APC group. Training rotations include Surgical Critical Care, Medical Critical Care, Oncologic Critical Care, and Anesthesia. Other rotations may include Cardiology, Cardiac Critical Care, Nephrology, Oncology, Hematology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Radiology, Gastroenterology, Neurosurgery, Infectious Disease, and Palliative Care. Trainees will be embedded within academic teams at the University of Utah Hospital and affiliates. Hours vary based on rotations, typically averaging 40 to 80 hours per week. Upon completion of the training period, trainees will be required to commit to two years as a full-time employee in the University of Utah Pulmonary Critical Care Division.

Responsibilities

  1. Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians.
  2. Performs physical examinations.
  3. Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, special imaging studies, and other diagnostic procedures.
  4. May perform central line placement, arterial line placement, intubation, paracentesis, thoracentesis, chest tube placement and management, cardioversion, lumbar punctures.
  5. Monitors the level of and adjusts immunosuppressive medications.
  6. Orders and supervises the administration of blood products.
  7. Formulates appropriate differential diagnosis of medical, surgical, and other conditions.
  8. Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physicians to provide optimal patient management.
  9. Participates in continuing medical education, including specialty and sub-specialty meetings, clubs, boards, and conferences.
  10. Assists in the collection of data for research projects.
  11. Orders consultations and interacts with other medical specialty teams.
  12. Participates in special projects and committee functions.
  13. Demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined.
  14. Provides care appropriate to the population served.
  15. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary for patient care across different age groups.
  16. Understands principles of lifespan growth and development, and can assess and provide care based on patient data.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensure to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Utah.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS, as required by the department or privileging criteria.
  • Utah State prescriptive privileges.
  • Master's degree in Nursing or equivalent (current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner).
  • National Certification via a recognized exam.
  • Credentialing and privileging at hire as per UHPPM 1-56.
  • Ability to perform essential functions, provide age-appropriate care, and demonstrate knowledge of lifespan growth and development.

Additional Information

This position is patient-sensitive; all employees must meet immunization requirements per CDC standards and hospital policy, with limited exemptions for medical or religious reasons.

Preferences

Experience in critical care or internal medicine preferred. New graduates with excellent clinical experience will also be considered.
