Job summary

Flagship Pioneering in Cambridge, MA is seeking a hands-on Research Associate II for its Protein Sciences team to advance protein expression, purification, and screening in a fast-paced startup environment.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's in bioengineering, biochemistry, microbiology, or related field with 2–5 years of lab experience in cloning, protein analysis, and GLP; familiarity with Benchling or Geneious is preferred. This role is based on-site in Cambridge, MA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 2–5 years of relevant research experience in bioengineering, biochemistry, microbiology, biotechnology, or related field.
• Hands-on experience with core microbiology operations: media prep, agar plate prep, aseptic technique, and GLP.
• Strong experience with molecular cloning: design, PCR, gel electrophoresis, isolation, Golden Gate, Gibson assembly.
• Experience with protein analysis techniques including SDS-PAGE and Western blot.
• Excellent communication, organization, and documentation skills; ability to troubleshoot experiments.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine microbiology operations including media preparation, agar plate preparation, and aseptic technique.
• Maintain GLP practices and a culture of safety and operational excellence.
• Generate and maintain microbial cell banks and inventory records.
• Support routine laboratory maintenance, equipment upkeep, and troubleshooting.
• Design and execute PCR for cloning, mutagenesis, and genotyping applications.
• Perform DNA assembly using Golden Gate, Gibson, and other cloning methods.
• Run and analyze gels; perform plasmid prep and nucleic acid quantification.
• Perform sequencing analysis using state-of-the-art technologies.
• Maintain construct and strain records in Benchling.
• Express engineered protein constructs across bacterial, yeast, and fungal systems.
• Analyze protein expression, purity, and integrity via SDS-PAGE/Western blot.
• Support protein purification workflows with chromatography techniques.
• Provide support for high-throughput screening workflows and data capture.
