Job summary

Town Of Abingdon is seeking a Code Enforcement professional to enforce property maintenance codes and related ordinances in Abingdon, VA. The role involves field inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, and vacant properties, as well as addressing citizen complaints and coordinating enforcement actions.

The ideal candidate has at least 3 years of experience in code enforcement or related fields and may require DHCD Property Maintenance Official certification or similar credentials.

Qualifications

• Completion of a standard high school course, or equivalent GED.
• Minimum of 3 years experience in code enforcement, building inspection, law enforcement, environmental science, civil engineering, or related field.
• DHCD Property Maintenance Official certification preferred or ability to obtain within designated timeframe.
• Stormwater Inspector certification preferred or ability to obtain within designated timeframe.
• Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector certification preferred or ability to obtain within designated timeframe.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Assists with clerical work including completion of reports and notices, answering telephones, interaction with contractors, property owners, developers, and representatives of other local, state, or federal agencies, both in the field and in the office.
• Enforce the Property Maintenance Code and other applicable Town ordinances.
• Conduct site inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction sites and post-construction sites to verify compliance with erosion and sediment control measures and stormwater management plans.
• Conduct inspections of residential, commercial, industrial and vacant properties to identify code violations.
• Investigate citizen complaints regarding property maintenance issues, nuisance conditions and unsafe structures.
• Issue notices of violation, correction orders, citations, and other enforcement documents as necessary.
