Job summary

Muskegon County is seeking an Appraisal Technician to support the Equalization Department. Under supervision, you will perform field and office assignments pertaining to the appraisal of real and personal property, measure physical characteristics, and assist in preparing formal appraisal reports.

You will analyze maps and legal descriptions, sketch building configurations from plans, input property boundaries, and interview owners or occupants to ensure accurate valuations.

Qualifications

• Possess an Associate’s degree or a minimum of two (2) years full time college level coursework from an Appraisal Technician accredited college or university (with a major in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, Business Administration or Public Relations preferred); OR
• Be a high school graduate or have successfully completed the GED; AND have at least one of the following:
• a. GIS certification from an accredited college or university; OR
• b. 6 months of work experience in GIS, Equalization Department, Planning Department or Building Inspections, or Real Estate; OR
• c. 15 or more credit hours in direct GIS classes; OR
• d. At least one year of experience performing residential field inspections in an Assessor’s office; OR
• e. Michigan MCAT/MCAO certificate or higher Assessment Administration certificate or possess a valid Appraisal License issued by the State of Michigan.
• Must obtain MCAT certification within one (1) year of hire to maintain employment.
• Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• An Appraisal Technician performs and assists in field and office assignments pertaining to the appraisal of both real and personal property.
• An employee measures physical characteristics of real property, evaluates cost records of personal property, and assists in preparing formal appraisal reports.
• Assists in analyzing maps and legal descriptions, sketches building configurations from architectural drawings, and inputs property boundaries for legal descriptions.
• Interviews owners or occupants to perform accurate appraisals and performs related duties as required.

Education

Associate’s degree or 2 years college coursework in Appraisal Technician program (Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, Business Administration or Public Relations preferred)

High school diploma or GED with GIS/related experience or credits

GIS certification from an accredited college or university

6 months GIS, Equalization, Planning, Building Inspections, or Real Estate experience

15+ credit hours in direct GIS classes

1 year of residential field inspections in an Assessor’s office

Michigan MCAT or MCAO certificate or higher Assessment Administration certificate or Appraisal License

MCAT certification within 1 year of hire
