Property and Evidence Custodian

The Property and Evidence Custodian is a non-sworn civilian member of the Police Department, reporting to the Detective Sergeant. This role involves the receipt, storage, and transfer of seized, recovered, and evidentiary physical and digital property.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate discretion, task prioritization, adaptability to new technologies, and the ability to work independently. The position is part-time, working up to 20 hours per week, with a maximum of 1,000 hours annually. Work hours are flexible, typically Monday through Friday.

This position is not eligible for benefits.

Responsibilities

1. Maintain and manage physical and digital evidence.
2. Correspond with the State’s Attorney’s Office, crime labs, and other law enforcement entities.
3. Ensure the timely release and disposal of property in compliance with state laws.
4. Keep property storage facilities and equipment clean, organized, and efficient.
5. Monitor departmental policies to ensure compliance with current laws and procedures.
6. Perform additional administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

• A high school diploma or equivalent.
• A valid driver’s license.
• Familiarity with digital media and experience with the Axon suite preferred.
• Previous experience with law enforcement systems such as BEAST evidence management and LEADS is preferred.
