Job summary

HITACHI ENERGY USA INC is seeking an experienced Electromechanical Engineer for embedded substation projects in Raleigh. You will manage the full lifecycle of AIS and GIS substation design, from schematics to construction documentation, collaborating with civil, electrical, and procurement teams.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in electrical/ mechanical engineering and 3+ years in electromechanical engineering, with NEC/IEEE knowledge and PE eligibility.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical/mechanical engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in electromechanical engineering.
  • Proficiency in developing single-line diagrams, Layout, detail design for various bus configurations.
  • Knowledge in substation design calculations, including grounding, short-circuit forces, cable ampacity, cable and conduit schedules, Auxiliary AC and DC design and related engineering software tools.
  • Comprehensive understanding of NEC, ANSI/IEEE standards, and high‑voltage AIS/GIS substation technologies.
  • Background in EPC project environments.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% domestically and internationally.
  • Must have valid work authorization permitting employment with Hitachi Energy in the United States.
  • Proficient in BIM / ACC and Revit for 3D modeling.
  • Possesses a PE license or ability to obtain one.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Primary engineering activities across the full project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams (Civil, Secondary, SCM) and external partners.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for Electromechanical Engineering.
  • Drive innovation and cost-effective solutions in proposals.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and contract standards.
  • Support installation and construction phases.
  • Evaluate risks and implement mitigation strategies with Project manager Engineering.
  • Promote continuous improvement and process optimization.
  • Develop base and detailed design documents and drawings based on customer requirements.
  • Drive completion of all engineering activities on projects.
  • Create work plans and cost estimates, ensuring quality deliverables.

Join Hitachi Energy and help deliver critical substation infrastructure that supports the reliability, safety, and performance of the power grid. In this role, you will Manage Primary Engineering (Electromechanical) activities across the full lifecycle of Air-Insulated Substation (AIS) and Gas-Insulated Substation (GIS) projects ranging from 69kV to 765kV substation.

You will work on a wide range of primary engineering activities, including single line diagram, layout, elevation, grounding, associated calculations, cable engineering, etc. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, customers, and installation team, you will help develop practical and cost-effective solutions for complex projects while supporting successful project execution from design through construction and commissioning. Your work will contribute directly to dependable grid operation, project quality, and continuous improvement initiatives while providing opportunities to expand your technical expertise across advanced substation technologies.
