Job summary

John H. Carter Co., Inc. in the United States is seeking an experienced outage planner and site lead to manage complex outage campaigns across our territory. You will oversee scope, budget, schedule, resources, and status updates, and travel to multiple sites as required.

The role requires 6+ years in industrial plant operations and maintenance, 2+ years in leadership, and strong knowledge of startup/shutdown sequences, process control, and software tools like SAP and Primavera.

Qualifications

  • Experience leading outage planning and scheduling teams.
  • Ability to communicate clearly under pressure and time constraints.
  • Proven knowledge of startup/shutdown sequences in industrial plants.
  • Strong understanding of process control equipment and instrumentation.
  • Experience reading electrical schematics and P&ID diagrams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead outage planning with budget, schedule, and resource oversight.
  • Coordinate field activities and observe safety and quality standards.
  • Provide written and verbal communications of technical concepts.
  • Ensure milestones align with project plans and budgets.
  • Travel to multiple sites for extended periods; support 12‑hour shifts when needed.
  • Enforce company policies and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify gaps in performance and drive corrective actions.
  • Complete pre-outage walkdowns and risk assessments.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • This job is demanding in terms of knowledge, skills, commitment, and all other job-related qualifications. The candidate must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently at various locations throughout our territory.
  • Manage execution of outage scope including budget, schedule, resources, and status updates.
  • Communicate technical information, concepts, and ideas verbally and in writing.
  • Assess conditions and make calculated decisions under pressure and time constraints.
  • Perform field observations of personnel to reinforce standards and expectations and identify gaps in performance.
  • Perform pre-outage walkdowns and risk assessments.
  • Ensure milestones are met as defined in the project plan.
  • Maintain a continuous improvement mindset; participate in pre-outage challenge meetings and post-outage critiques.
  • Assume responsibility for related duties as required or special projects as assigned.
  • Available to travel out of town for multiple weeks in a row, and occasionally work 12‑hour shifts for up to 13 days in a row.
  • Follow John H. Carter Co., Inc. policies, procedures and methodologies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Proficiency in outage planning and scheduling.
  • Knowledge of startup and shutdown sequences.
  • Technical understanding of process control equipment and its applications (valves, actuators, instrumentation, etc).
  • Skilled at reading and interpretation of Electrical Schematics and P&ID’s.
  • Proficiency in Office365 apps: Microsoft Excel, Teams, and OneDrive.
  • Preferred Software: SAP, Maximo, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project.
Education

Bachelors or better.

Community College/Vo-Tech or better.

Technical/Other Training or better.

Experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a leadership role.
  • Minimum 6 years’ commercial or military work experience related to industrial plant operations and maintenance (examples: Maintenance planner/scheduler/coordinator, Operator, E&I Technician, etc.).
