Project Engineer / Project Manager – Laboratory Facilities
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana, United States
Organization Overview:
This position is part of a global facilities project management team responsible for executing capital projects that support research, development, and testing capabilities. The organization oversees the planning and delivery of new and renovated laboratory spaces, working closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to meet evolving business needs. These projects often focus on enabling scientific innovation by installing state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and infrastructure. Execution is carried out in partnership with design, construction, and qualification contractors.
Responsibilities:
Lead and manage capital projects focused on laboratory environments, including the specification, procurement, installation, and commissioning of lab equipment and fixtures.
Oversee project execution from concept through operational readiness, ensuring alignment with technical requirements and end-user needs.
Manage project scope, budget, and schedule while proactively identifying risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
Ensure all lab installations comply with internal policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., GMP, EH&S).
Coordinate with scientists, lab managers, facility engineers, and vendors to ensure functional and efficient lab layouts and equipment integration.
Develop and maintain safety and environmental execution plans for lab setup and construction phases.
Facilitate communication across project teams, stakeholders, and external contractors to resolve issues, manage changes, and maintain project momentum.
Basic Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Life Sciences, or a related technical field (e.g., construction management, project management)
Minimum 2 years of experience delivering capital projects in lab, R&D, or technical facility settings
Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years of experience managing capital projects involving laboratory equipment installation and lab infrastructure setup
Direct experience with lab construction projects over $5 million in total cost
Knowledge of laboratory operations, research workflows, and scientific instrumentation (e.g., biosafety cabinets, fume hoods, incubators, chromatography systems)
Experience in GMP, GLP, or other regulated environments
Familiarity with laboratory utilities and infrastructure (e.g., HVAC, compressed gases, DI water, emergency power)
Understanding of LEAN lab design and efficient space utilization
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and external contractors through all phases of lab project execution
Strong organizational and communication skills
Willingness to travel or relocate depending on project site location
Professional certifications such as PMP or PE
Experience coordinating with commissioning, qualification, and validation teams
Additional Information:
Travel: Minimum 25% with potential full relocation depending on the project. Onsite presence is required for project execution.
