Job description

Our client is a well-established Connecticut general contractor with a strong portfolio across affordable housing, multi-family, senior living, academic, municipal, and private development work. Their projects range from ground-up residential and mixed-use builds to public-sector renovations and additions, and they’re known for delivering organized, quality-driven construction throughout the state. As their backlog continues to grow, they’re seeking an experienced Project Manager to support active work out of their Connecticut office.

Position Overview

The Axel Group is seeking a proven Project Manager with commercial construction experience to oversee projects from preconstruction handoff through closeout.

This role is best suited for someone who understands how to manage the full lifecycle of projects similar to multi-family / affordable housing, senior living, municipal, and institutional work -someone who can lead the administrative and technical side of the job while staying closely connected to field execution. The Project Manager will be responsible for driving schedule, budget, subcontractor coordination, documentation, and overall project performance while partnering closely with Superintendents and ownership teams to keep projects moving efficiently and professionally. This emphasis aligns with the company’s mix of residential, public, and mixed-use work visible across its portfolio.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own overall project execution from startup through closeout, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Provide both administrative and technical leadership across assigned projects, coordinating closely with owner representatives, subcontractors, Superintendents, and internal team members.
  • Manage day-to-day project operations across projects that may include ground-up residential, mixed-use, municipal, academic, and renovation/addition work.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, staffing plans, material flow, and equipment requirements to support successful execution in the field.
  • Monitor and direct construction progress through close coordination with on-site Superintendents and project teams.
  • Lead subcontractor coordination and maintain strong communication across all stakeholders to keep projects organized and on track.
  • Maintain project logs, reports, and document control using Procore and related project management tools.
  • Review drawings and specifications, provide technical interpretation, and help drive practical construction solutions when issues arise in the field.
  • Coordinate on-site functions including scheduling, engineering support, material control, and oversight of project-related administrative activity.
  • Manage financial aspects of the project including contract administration, cost control, change management, and protecting the company’s overall interests.
  • Ensure compliance with project procedures, safety expectations, and company work rules across all assigned operations.
  • Represent the company in project meetings and maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, and project partners.
  • Help identify and resolve issues early to keep work progressing smoothly through all phases of construction.
Skills and Qualifications
  • 3+ years of Project Management experience in the construction industry.
  • Strong background managing commercial construction projects from preconstruction through closeout.
  • Experience with projects such as multi-family, affordable housing, senior living, municipal, academic, mixed-use, or similar commercial/institutional work is highly relevant given the nature of the company’s portfolio.
  • Strong understanding of project scheduling, subcontractor coordination, documentation, budgeting, and field support.
  • Organized and systematic approach to managing multiple moving parts across a project.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain good relationships with field teams, subcontractors, clients, and internal leadership.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and confidence in managing both technical and operational responsibilities.
  • Proficiency with project management software; Procore preferred.
Why Join Us?
  • Join a respected Connecticut builder with a long-standing presence and a diverse project portfolio that spans housing, public, and institutional work.
  • Opportunity to manage meaningful projects that are more complex than a one-lane commercial build, including residential redevelopment, mixed-use, and public-sector assignments.
  • Strong pipeline of work throughout Connecticut with exposure to both ground-up and renovation/addition projects.
  • High-impact Project Manager role with visibility across operations, field execution, and client-facing project leadership.
