Duration: 12-Month Contract with Potential Extensions
We are seeking an experienced Estimator to support the development of cost estimates for complex, multidisciplinary construction and infrastructure projects. This position will support major energy and infrastructure initiatives, including transmission, substation, renewable energy integration, battery storage, and other large-scale projects.
The ideal candidate will have strong, hands-on estimating experience and a solid understanding of construction means and methods, project scope, materials, labor, equipment, site conditions, and overall project cost drivers.
Direct utility or substation estimating experience is preferred, but we are also interested in experienced estimators from heavy industrial construction, large infrastructure projects, specialized contractors, and other complex construction environments.
This role is well suited for an estimator who can review preliminary drawings, sketches, scopes, and other available project information and develop a well-supported estimate, even when detailed design information is not yet available.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop conceptual, authorization, and appropriation cost estimates for complex construction and infrastructure projects.
- Prepare detailed estimates based on preliminary engineering information, drawings, sketches, scopes of work, specifications, and project documentation.
- Review project requirements and identify major cost drivers, risks, assumptions, and opportunities.
- Interpret preliminary designs and determine the assumptions needed to develop complete and accurate estimates.
- Evaluate construction means and methods, including labor, materials, equipment, site access, installation requirements, and logistics.
- Work closely with engineering, project management, construction, and operations teams to understand project scope and develop appropriate cost estimates.
- Communicate with engineers and other technical professionals when project information or design details are still being developed.
- Consider practical construction challenges associated with transporting, accessing, staging, and installing large equipment and materials.
- Evaluate requirements such as rigging, cranes, foundations, access roads, retaining structures, platforms, and other site development needs when applicable.
- Develop and maintain cost models, estimating databases, project documentation, and supporting assumptions.
- Assist with project budgets, forecasting, authorization, and appropriation processes.
- Support multiple estimating assignments while meeting deadlines and changing priorities.
- Participate in field visits when needed to evaluate existing conditions and support accurate project estimates.
- Ensure estimates are complete, well documented, and aligned with project objectives and applicable standards.
- Support major energy, infrastructure modernization, and renewable energy integration initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of strong, hands-on estimating experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing cost estimates for complex construction projects.
- Strong understanding of construction means and methods and how they impact project costs.
- Ability to interpret preliminary drawings, sketches, project scopes, and other incomplete project information and develop reasonable estimating assumptions.
- Strong understanding of project scope, materials, labor, equipment, logistics, site conditions, and cost drivers.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, construction, project management, and other technical teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project, and estimating software applications and databases.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with transmission, substation, utility, or energy infrastructure projects.
- Engineering or design experience related to substations or transmission facilities.
- Utility estimating experience, particularly projects involving connections to utility systems.
- Civil estimating experience with knowledge of electrical and/or mechanical construction.
- Experience supporting large-scale infrastructure, industrial, heavy construction, or utility projects.
- Experience preparing authorization and appropriation estimates.
- Understanding of utility capital budgeting processes and utility economics.
- Familiarity with applicable local, state, national, and industry codes and standards.
- Experience supporting renewable energy projects, includ
