Position Summary:
The Project Engineer Supervisor is a vital leadership role responsible for applying advanced engineering principles and practices across various projects while providing supervision to a team of engineers, technicians, and administrative staff. This position combines technical expertise, managerial responsibilities, and collaboration with Project Managers to ensure project success. The ideal candidate will have a robust understanding of project design, job costing, and interdisciplinary teamwork.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Responsibilities:
- Independently design complete systems, components, and processes.
- Prepare comprehensive project documents, including detailed technical specifications and reports.
- Conduct and oversee experiments, analyze data, and interpret results to inform decision-making.
- Implement innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges.
- Maintain technical expertise in a specific functional area or capability within the group, such as specialized equipment or systems.
Managerial Responsibilities:
- Supervise, mentor, and assign tasks to a team of engineers, technicians, and administrative personnel.
- Plan and coordinate detailed aspects of engineering work across multiple projects of varying complexity.
- Prepare and manage project scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments and major initiatives.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to align engineering deliverables with overall project objectives.
- Oversee job costing processes, ensuring accurate tracking of design, engineering, and implementation expenses.
- Assist in the preparation of proposals, business case analyses, and strategic planning initiatives.
- Lead performance evaluations and professional development efforts for team members.
- Work with Engineering Team to establish Standard Operating Procedures and ensure the use and benefit of these procedures.
Working Relationships:
- Act as a key liaison between engineering teams, Project Managers, and stakeholders to ensure seamless communication and project alignment.
- Interact directly with clients, customers, and suppliers to understand requirements and provide updates on project progress.
- Represent the organization at project/program reviews and present detailed aspects of engineering assignments.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology.
- Advanced degrees may partially substitute for experience.
- 6-15+ years of relevant engineering experience, including supervisory or leadership roles.
- Professional Engineer (PE) designation preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
- Broad knowledge of engineering principles and the ability to adapt standard techniques to specific project needs.
- Strong understanding of job costing within design and engineering frameworks.
- Ability to function effectively on multi-disciplinary teams and manage cross-functional collaboration.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects of moderate to significant size simultaneously.
- Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, particularly in unconventional or complex scenarios.
Direction and Oversight:
- Work under general direction for key objectives and receive guidance as needed for unconventional problems or conflicting criteria.
- Completed work is reviewed for sound judgment and adherence to project requirements.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
- Effective communicator with the ability to interact professionally with clients, customers, and suppliers.
- Skilled in presenting technical concepts and project updates to diverse audiences.
- Experience attending and contributing to project/program reviews.
